Loss Prevention Is Not Sales Prevention

Natasha Caines, 33, of Queens, NY, was nabbed by cops in Braintree, MA, after she allegedly stole some Nautica apparel from Macy’s. She was observed by loss prevention agents trying to remove sensor tags from high end jackets. When she couldn’t get them off, she picked out the Nautica merchandise, that was not tagged, and then exited the store with it. She was observed placing the merchandise into a Mercedes. She then proceeded to walk away, but was detained by police.

mercedesPolice found two watches in Caines’ purse that had apparently been shoplifted from nearby Gap. Upon searching the Mercedes, police recovered over $1,150.00 worth of merchandise, mostly clothing and jewelry, presumably stolen by Caines from area retailers, including Talbots, J. Crew, Aldo Accessories, Forever 21, and Arden B.

Of course, she was only charged with shoplifting from Macy’s, and for possession of stolen property for the watches. The stuff in the Mercedes was returned to the stores, but none of them pressed charges.

I wonder if she drives a Mercedes because she can afford it from all that shoplifting. I mean, $1,150.00 in one haul is a pretty good day. This is pure speculation, but I also wonder if she drove all the way there from NY just to shoplift, or was she just visiting and decided to go on a shoplifting spree while she was there?

Oh, I know. The economy made her do it ;-)

You may have already seen this story about a La Crosse, WI doctor and his wife caught shoplifting over $1500.00 from a Milwaukee area Macy’s. But, did you realize that they also had their kids in tow, and that they hid some of the items in their kids’ stroller?

I won’t get into the economic situation of the doctor except to say that he worked for a non-profit clinic, so in all likelihood, he isn’t “rich”. But, his wife stated to police that he made $150,000 per year, so they ain’t exactly poor, neither.

Dr. Sumit Sinha and his wife Tania attempted to steal over $1500.00 worth of “Christmas gifts” from Macy’s. They were recorded on cctv, and were detained by Macy’s loss prevention. Tania Sinha admitted the theft to local police, and told them it was her idea. She also has a prior arrest for shoplifting in 2007.

Sadly, this all unfolded with their kids involved. I guess they couldn’t afford a babysitter, either.

No names have been released yet, but according to news reports, a loss prevention agent for the Macy’s in the Dayton Mall in Dayton, OH, was arrested for intentionally looking away while 4 shoplifters carried off $10,000.00 in merchandise!

One of the alleged shoplifters was the sister of the loss prevention agent. The 24 year old LP agent had been working for Macy’s since February, and his manager suspected something was going on, so a surveillance was conducted on the LP agent by the manager.

The 5 suspects arrested on Tuesday are expected to be charged with felonies in connection with the thefts. Police also suspect that this was not the first time the group stole merchandise from the store. It is unclear what the group intended to do with the stolen merchandise at this time.

How about this? Is this a sign of the economic times, too? In an unrelated case in Raceland, KY recently, an off-duty police officer was arrested and charged with shoplifting. He later resigned from the police department.

This begs the question, “Who can we trust?” I would respond by quoting my boss, “In God we trust, everybody else, we interview”.
