Loss Prevention Is Not Sales Prevention

James Dean Woodworth and Samantha Lomasney have been charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of Kmart Loss Prevention Officer Greg Wainio, of Clarkston, MI. According to reports, Wainio attempted to apprehend Woodworth outside the Kmart at Waterford Township, and was dragged by the SUV that Woodworth entered, driven by Lomasney, for several hundred feet. Wainio was taken to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

This was a very sad day for loss prevention, and even worse for Greg’s family. Greg leaves behind twin 8-year-old boys, one of which has a terminal illness. A fund has been set up, and I would encourage all of our readers to contribute what you can to help this family through this hard time. You can also send your condolences to the family by visiting this link.

It is worth mentioning that Woodworth was a career criminal, with a long rap sheet and multiple theft convictions, including an armed robbery for which he was out on parole at the time of this incident.

Please pay your respects to Greg’s family, and donate if you can. Updates and comments welcome in the comments section below.

An, as yet, unidentified loss prevention agent for Kmart in Waterford Township, MI, was killed yesterday when he was dragged several hundred feet by shoplifters attempting to escape in a vehicle. Reports indicate the 36-year-old loss prevention agent struggled with a 39-year-old male shoplifting suspect outside the Kmart on Highland Road. He was then dragged several hundred feet across the parking lot before being dislodged from the vehicle. It is unclear how he was dislodged, but reports indicate the driver was intentionally trying to remove the LP Agent from the vehicle, striking posts and driving erratically through the parking lot. The agent was taken to the hospital, but died soon after. Police are not releasing any names pending further investigation and notification of the agent’s family.

It is a very sad day in loss prevention today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this LP agent, and we will follow up with more details as they become available.

Dumpster This one doesn’t specifically fall under the “Idiot Parent” award category, but since Louis Shaffer is related to at least 2 of the kids involved here, I figure, close enough.

Louis Shaffer, 18, of Stamford, CT, along with Lisa Shaffer, 22, and Jacqueline McCoogle, 21, attempted to shoplift some where around $1000.00 from their local Walmart. They also had three small children with them at the time. As they exited the store, they were approached by store loss prevention officers.

Louis Shaffer ran away from loss prevention, taking one of the children with him. He was found soon after by police trying to climb into a dumpster at the rear of a nearby building. He had already placed the 5-year-old into the dumpster when police apprehended him.

The Shaffers and McCoogle were charged with 4th degree larceny, risk of injury to a minor, and conspiracy to commit 4th degree larceny.

So, basically, Shaffer goes into a Walmart with three little kids and shoplifts. Then, when store loss prevention officers attempt to apprehend him, he runs off with one of the kids. He attempts to hide both the child and himself in a nearby trash dumpster to escape police. In the process, Shaffer abandons his two accomplices and the other two children.

If these kids do belong to Shaffer, which is not clear from any reports, then he definitely deserves to be in the running for Idiot Parent. If they are not his kids, then I hope the parents of the kids feel the way I would if someone took my kids into a store, stole in front of them, then tried to escape police when caught, endangering my kids and putting one of them in a trash dumpster.

Here’s our first Idiot Parent Award for 2010. Tammy Gutierrez, 35, of Green Bay, WI, has a history of shoplifting with her kids. On Thursday, January 7th, Gutierrez not only used 3 of her kids to shoplift from a local grocer, but she instructed them to assault a store employee and then the four of them ran to a waiting van. Inside the van were Gutierrez’s 4 other children.

But wait, there’s more. Gutierrez fled from police in the van, with her seven children and another unidentified adult in the vehicle, on snow covered roads, and soon crashed head on into an oncoming vehicle.

But wait, there’s more. Gutierrez faces charges of eluding an officer, retail theft, disorderly conduct, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, reckless driving, causing injury while knowingly driving with a suspended license, operating while suspended, and multiple seat belt violations.

But wait, there’s more. Are you ready for this? Gutierrez was supposed to be in jail! She walked away from “work release” on December 23rd, and was considered an escapee. Her six-month sentence allowed her out of jail daily to work and care for her seven kids.

But wait, there’s still more. She was serving the six-month jail sentence in the first place for… you guessed it: Shoplifting with her kids!!! Gutierrez had been caught on at least four previous occasions shoplifting with her kids.

What a way to start 2010 with the Idiot Parent Awards. This one will be tough to beat. Maybe the court system should get an award for giving her “work release” in the first place.  Hey, you think they’ll blame this on the economy?

Mark Zachary of Orangeburg, SC, is apparently neither a good shoplifter nor liar. Last Wednesday, he was found guilty of shoplifting an $80 steak from Reid’s Grocery in August last year. When caught, after a brief attempt to get away, he told police and store employees that he was just “massaging the meat”. Yep, he was massaging the meat, not stealing it. He wasn’t going to take it, just borrow it so he could, umm, massage it. He was sentenced to 10 years for the shoplifting conviction. Why so long for a shoplifting? It was his ninth offense.

We just have one question: Hey Mark, just exactly HOW were you massaging the meat, there, pal? Have fun in prison.
