You post a lot about these mothers who use their children to help them steal. Why is that?

Allan,
You’re right, I probably beat this topic over the head a little too much. The thing is, I really get ticked off when I read news reports about “parents” who use their own kids to commit crimes, and then either abandon them when their confronted, or try to use the kids as a means of escape. I think these people are some of the worst when it comes to shoplifters, and I think that we should spread their names around and let people know what they’ve done.
Actually, I’ve been working on a post on “Fundamentals” in loss prevention, but this one struck home, so I thought I’d pass it along…
I also think that these behaviors are fueling the youth crime in this country to some degree. When parents are actually teaching their kids how to steal, then the kids get the impression that stealing is okay. It is acceptable to their parents, so it must not really be wrong, right?

I can’t imagine that they’re teaching their kids much of anything. These are people whose children are simple decoys or afterthoughts. But, on the flip side, imagine what kind of terrible background they must come from to behave in such a way. It’s really quite sad.
