Loss Prevention Is Not Sales Prevention

No names have been released yet, but according to news reports, a loss prevention agent for the Macy’s in the Dayton Mall in Dayton, OH, was arrested for intentionally looking away while 4 shoplifters carried off $10,000.00 in merchandise!

One of the alleged shoplifters was the sister of the loss prevention agent. The 24 year old LP agent had been working for Macy’s since February, and his manager suspected something was going on, so a surveillance was conducted on the LP agent by the manager.

The 5 suspects arrested on Tuesday are expected to be charged with felonies in connection with the thefts. Police also suspect that this was not the first time the group stole merchandise from the store. It is unclear what the group intended to do with the stolen merchandise at this time.

How about this? Is this a sign of the economic times, too? In an unrelated case in Raceland, KY recently, an off-duty police officer was arrested and charged with shoplifting. He later resigned from the police department.

This begs the question, “Who can we trust?” I would respond by quoting my boss, “In God we trust, everybody else, we interview”.

8 Knoxville, TN football players have been arrested as part of an investigation that resulted in a total of 33 arrests. Investigators with the Knoxville Police and Knox County Sheriff’s Office conducted a 3 day investigation that concluded with the arrests of 33 suspects, including the 8 football players from Austin-East High School.

Police charge that the 8 players worked as a team when shoplifting, also. According to police investigators, some of the players would distract retail store employees while others stole merchandise. Police recovered over $9,000.00 in stolen merchandise.

But, the news report states that their status on the school’s football team is unclear. The coach reportedly stated that he would evaluate their status on the team.

Come again? Evaluate their status? Hey coach Graham, they have been charged with felonies! Doesn’t that at least warrant suspension pending the resolution of their cases in court? Oh, I’m sorry, they are supposed to play in a playoff game this weekend? Oh, well, that changes things.

Really, folks, what is there to evaluate. They have been charged with felony theft. Police had enough evidence to arrest and charge them. So, at the very least, their football careers should be put on hold until they are either exonerated or proven guilty.

What do you think? Should they be suspended from the team? Should they be allowed to play this weekend? Leave a comment and we can discuss it.
