Barry Webne is an admitted thief. In fact, in 1996, he was convicted, and spent time in prison, for stealing over a million dollars from his employer at the time, Bettcher Manufacturing Corp. You would think he would have learned his lesson, and it appeared he had.
After being released from prison, Mr. Webne went to work for Corporate Protection Services, a subsidiary of Block Communications Company, where he conducted seminars warning corporations about employee theft and embezzlement.
But all the while, he was stealing from his new employer. He was writing checks to himself, and then doctoring the books, and according to the report, he also stole a bundle of checks, which he used to make personal purchases.
Oh, but that’s not all. This guy even had a scheme where he gave himself pay raises by submitting falsified payroll paperwork. In all, he was held responsible for a whopping $1,138,334.90 in stolen funds!
Webne has now been convicted of embezzling over one million dollars from his new employer. So, in just under 12 years, he has managed to steal over two million dollars from his employers.
Webne did not disclose his past conviction to Block Communications. Apparently, they did not conduct a background screening, either.
Okay, so this guy steals a million dollars, gets caught, and serves six months in prison for it. Then, he gets a job where he warns companies to watch out for people like himself. At the same time, he is stealing from his current employer, and giving himself regular pay raises. I guess he was rewarding himself for being so clever.
Why do you think he did it again? I’ll tell you what I think. I think it has a lot to do with that original prison term of a whole whopping six months. Steal a million dollars, serve six months in prison. Seems like a fair trade, for the thief. At least this time, he has five years to think about it and formulate a new plan.
