Loss Prevention Is Not Sales Prevention

A couple in Pasco, WA was caught using a doll and stroller to conceal DVD’s and other merchandise. Police arrested Jocelyn Giles and James Doty after they were observed concealing the merchandise in a Costco store.  Police also siezed their car from the parking lot, and are getting a search warrant so they can determine if there is more stolen merchandise in the vehicle.

At least they weren’t using a real baby! Still, they had over $800.00 in stolen merchandise in the stroller when police stopped them. Police have also stated that the couple have sold stolen merchandise on Craigslist and eBay in the past. If this is so, then it appears they simply cut out the middle man (Fence), and were running the entire operation themselves.

This is just one example of many of how boosters come up with creative ways to steal in hopes of not attracting the attention of store loss prevention agents. Apparently, they weren’t aware of the fact that this ploy is by no means new, and loss prevention agents are pretty good at telling the difference between a real baby and a doll. We’re observant like that.

Akisha Hempfield was sentenced to 3 years in jail and 3 years probation on Tuesday. Hempfield is a convicted shoplifter who, while trying to escape police, abondoned her infant child with loss prevention. She then tried to carjack an 82 year old lady, who fought her off until a bystander stepped in to assist the elderly heroine.
Hempfield, who has 3 prior shoplifting convictions, was apprehended by police in the parking lot a short time later.
Here we have yet another example of parenting genius. Not only did Hempfield make the decision to take her infant with her on her shoplifting excursion, but she also made the decision to abandon the child with strangers in order to save her own skin.
To make matters worse, she then victimized an elderly lady in attempting to steal a car so she could escape. Then, we find out that this is not her first, but fourth, documented arrest for shoplifting. I say she earned every minute of that 3 year sentence.
