What if you had video or a still photo of a shoplifter, burglar, etc. who had victimized your business, but had no way to distribute it to the public to help Police solve the crime?
Well, now there is a free resource that allows businesses to post those videos or photos online where it can be viewed by the world. Businesses can even offer rewards as an incentive to anyone with knowledge to provide a tip.
What is it called? Postacrime.com. Using a Google Maps engine, and PostaCrime’s search function, businesses post photos, videos, and details of the crime to the site; and then viewers can review the submissions in their city, town, or neighborhood. If they recognize the person in the video, they can provide a tip.
Even Police Departments are getting involved, and videos and photos are being posted all the time.
Here is an excerpt from PostaCrime.com’s Frequently Asked Questions page:
POSTACRIME.COM was started to help business owners and loss prevention managers fight back against retail crime, but it also has a much broader appeal to the general public. Anyone who has had their car or house broken into or their property vandalized can post details about the crime (with or without photo or video evidence) to share with their neighbors and community. Other POSTACRIME.COM members can search this database of crimes and offer tips and share information about specific crimes for which they have knowledge. Crimes posted on POSTACRIME are generally non-violent and involve loss of property only. POSTACRIME.COM is not intended to be used for posting crimes like murder, assault, rape, or other violent crimes, and these types of crimes should not be posted to POSTACRIME.COM. If you have information about a violent crime, please contact your local law enforcement agency directly.
If you own a business, and have ever been a victim of retail crime, you know how valuable this resource can be. Pay PostaCrime a visit, and check out what’s happening in your town.
